Guiding Pension Fund Portfolios Through Regime Shifts

We find ourselves in a period of profound economic and market regime change. We have had to examine how we are positioned in our current multi-manager portfolios and make changes when we do not like what we see.  At NB, we use a multi-asset factor framework to build our multi-strategy equity and fixed income portfolios. We believe this helps reduce unintended or unwanted risks in times of uncertainty.  We will discuss:

  • How recent shifts have thrown portfolios off balance
  • How we measure factor risk and circumstantial regime sensitivities of our portfolios
  • Measuring the alpha of active and passive portfolios
  • Deciding which alphas are worth their associated factor and regime risks
  • Ways to reduce the regime sensitivity of a portfolio and focus on the highest-conviction ideas
